LESSON INFORMATION:

WHAT LEVEL DO I TEACH? I teach from BEGINNERS to ADVANCED players with an emphasis on technique to give faster results.

• LESSONS for CHILDREN aged 4 years and above; I’m a parent myself and teaching children is something I love to do. Also, I encourage a parent/guardian to attend the lesson so they can assist the student with their daily practice.

• LESSONS for ADULTS: around half of my students are teenagers or working adults. Adults actually learn the violin much faster than most children. What adults lack in time, they make up for in motivation and disciplined regular practice.

THE VIOLIN/GUITAR TEACHER: My name is Peter Murray and I hold a Bachelor of Music Education Degree specializing in the Suzuki Violin Method. I have been a Violin Teacher for over 25 years in Australia, Malaysia and Singapore. Also, as a High School Music Teacher in Sydney for ten years. My Performance experience includes orchestra, chamber groups, Irish Fiddle, Australian Bush Fiddle, American Folk and recording violin in Studios.

  1. hi there!

I am keen in rekindling my violin playing, i’ve got mine own and wouldnt mind travelling to Pandan Valley. However, may I know your lesson slots for 2011?

    would appreciate an email reply.

    Thanks.

  2. Hello Peter,
I have 3 yr old girl who is extremely interested in music – she is very quick at learning songs by herself just by listening to Cds etc (at 2 plus, she could sing a song that she listened a year ago and we never taught her) . I would like to develop her music skill but unsure if she would love the violin. Would you be able to assess this perhaps via a trial classs at my home (in the east)?

  3. hi,
i used to attend violin lesson at music school for a short while but did not use suzuki method, if i were to learn from you, would it be a problem? is the sat morning slot still available?

    • Hi, thanks for your enquiry. On Saturday morning I have only one 30minute slot still available. Its at 9.15am. I hope this time is alright for you.
No problem if you haven’t used the Suzuki method – I design the violin lessons around what you want to learn and the learning style that works best for you. The Suzuki classical repertoire is recommended by many teachers as it is well selected in increasing level of difficulty. I also use other material and styles, especially for beginners I use a book which has a pop accompaniment practice CD.
If you want to come for one lesson to try out you are very welcome. I charge $30 per lesson. Hope to hear from you: sms or call 96611413 Peter

  4. hi I am currently 19 yes old with no musical background.I am interested in learning violin .are you available on weekends for lessons preferably in evenings.thanks

    • Hi, thanks for your enquiry.
For an evening, the closest to a weekend evening I can offer you is Friday evening at 8pm.
Saturdays I am teaching from 9am till 5.15pm. If you are interested in 5.15pm or 6pm on Saturday please let me know. This is the latest I am teaching on Saturday. Sunday, no lessons. Hope this helps. I’d like to hear from you, my Handphone is 96611413 for sms or call.
      Best Regards Peter

  5. Hello!
I’m 15 years old and play the guitar and ukulele. I’ve goofed around on the mandolin and can play “I’ll Fly Away” and “Whiskey for Breakfast.” I am interested in learning either violin or mandolin in a group setting. I know the group lessons won’t begin until February. I own a violin and am interested in picking it up (tried to with some video lessons, but I believe I need a teacher in front of me.) Could you please reply by email? Thanks! Ana

    • and I am also interested in mandolin. Could you give me a little more information on how and what you teach for it? Thanks!

      • Hi Ana, what I teach depends on what you want to learn. If you want to learn to read music then music books are used. If you do not need to read music then chords are taught followed by playing melody by ear in the style of music that you prefer. Give me a call on 96611413 to arrange a trial lesson – regards Peter

  6. Hi there,

I am keen in restarting lessons for the viola. I started lessons about 3 years ago, and stopped briefly for about a year due to work commitments. I am wondering if we can arrange for a trial lesson? I’m working full time, hence I can only make it in the evenings or during the weekends. Please let me know your available time slots.

    Thanks!
    Yvonne

    • Hi Yvonne, I hope you can come to one of the times available in the evening or Saturday:
TIMES STILL AVAILABLE as at 14/1/2012:
      Wednesday 7pm;
      Thursday 7pm
      Friday 7.15pm;

  7. Hi Peter, I would like to know if u have old European maker’s(luthier) violins for sale? I need a good one yet it must not be too expensive. I’m also keen in taking lessons with u.
By the way, if u have violins I may like when can I come for viewing?
Pls do not hesitate to contact me @ my mobile: 97951030
    Thank you!

    • Hi Steven,

thanks for your email enquiry. I have old European maker’s violins. One is
ready for viewing by Adolf Stowasser of Grazlitz Austria, and several will
be ready in a month’s time as they are needing to be cleaned and set up
with new pegs, tailpiece, bridge, and strings. If you can wait it will be
more worthwhile for you to visit later. I can inform you when more violins
      are ready.
Regarding the lessons, you are welcome to come for a trial lesson which
costs $30 for a 30 minute lesson. Just let me know your preference from the
      times below:

      *Wednesday 2.30, 3.00, 5.30, 6.30pm; **Friday 11.00am, 11.30am,** 12.30,
      1.00, 2.00, 2.30, 3.30, 4.00pm.*

*Information on the Prewar 1924-1948 Austrian Labelled Violin by Adolf
Stowasser* – label reads: “Adolf Stowasser, Instrumenten-Fabrik, Graz.”
Adolf Stowasser made violins in the area of Bohemia – Graslitz (Austria)
between the years 1924-1948. This violin is a nicely crafted old
instrument, with a masterly carved scroll and accurately inlaid purfling.
Its sound is resonant with excellent volume and projection. It is
masterfully made to give even tone across all the strings especially in the
higher register where most violins struggle. Due to its outstanding tone in
the higher registers it is highly recommended for the advanced student. Due
to its age there are two old repaired cracks on the front left side. They
are very stable as they are not near the bass bar they do not effect the
sound. The front is finely grained spruce and the back, neck and ribs are a
      nicely flamed maple.

      It measures aprox.: full length:59 cm/23.22”, body only:35.6 cm / 14.01”,
      vibrating chord length 33 cm / 12.99”, weight ~430 gr / 0.947 lbs.

This is a genuine labelled violin by Adolf Stowasser who is a known maker.
Other instruments by Adolf Stowasser sell for US$2,000 and above. *Price
      S$1,190*
      Best regards

      Peter
      96611413

      • Hi Peter, thanks for your reply. Pls inform me when those European violins are ready for viewing. I’m not so keen in cracked violin, pls help me to lookout for violins with uncracked condition. Thank you.

        Best regards

  8. Please advise if you have any good full size violin. My girl is 10yrs old and currently preparing for grade 5.

    • Hi Mrs Kwan,

thanks for your enquiry. If your girl is ready for a full size violin then it is worthwhile to spend a bit more to get an advanced violin for around S$1000 -$1200 which she can use for the higher grades of grade 6, 7 & 8. These violins which I sell for around $1,000 retail for $2000 plus in the shops because they are made with European spruce and maple.
For around $1000-1200 I also have antique 100 yr old European violins which have a more mature warmer sound.
I recommend you come and try the violins I have so you can make an informed decision for yourself.

Hope to hear from you soon

      Peter

  9. Hello Peter,
My daughter of 10 years old would like to begin violin lessons. We are American, and she has had 16 months of piano there. Without a piano here, she would like to take up violin. We will need to purchase a violin as well. We are homeschooling, so our available times are quite flexible. We do prefer weekday lessons. Please let me know what you would have available.

    Warmly,
    Traci Moore

    • Hi Tracy,

thanks for your enquiry. I recommend you come for a trial lesson first. I can provide a violin for the lesson and also show you a selection of violins for future purchase.
After the trial lesson you can secure a weekly lesson slot with a monthly fee of 4 lessons. The lessons are individual not groups lessons at the following price: $30 for 30 minutes or $45 for 45 minutes.
As I have limited slots available I do not refund for absences but do offer replacement lessons.

      The following times are available:

      Tuesday: no times available.

      Wednesday: 5.30, 6.00pm.

      Thursday: 7.00pm.

      Friday: 4.30, 5.00pm.

      Saturday: 2.30, 3.00pm.

Please let me know what time you can come for the trial lesson.

Looking forward to hearing from you
      Peter 96611413

  10. Hi Peter,

My boy is using 1/4 violin now and he has out grown it. Probably need a 1/2 size now. May I know if u have quite good violin to recommend? My budget is around $400. Thanks!

    • Hi Frances,
I definitely can help you find a good sounding 1/2 size violin for less than $400. Let me know what day and time you are wanting to come and try the violins. Call or sms 96611413 Best regards Peter

  11. Hi Peter, just enquire if my son is preparing for his grade 3 violin recently but have not learnt any theory lessons of date yet, is it too late for theory now?

    James

    • Hi James, certainly there is no time like the present. Theory can be learnt at any time, however, regarding exams you can’t sit for the 6th grade ABRSM exam if you don’t have the 5th Grade theory exam certificate. So you will need to get a theory teacher to catch up. All the best Peter

    • Hi James, sorry for the late reply. It is never too late to learn theory. I can recommend the Lina Ng “Music Theory Made Easy” books that are available at Yamaha Music Plaza Singapora. These books can be worked through at home and do not require very much of the teachers time.

  12. Peter,
We have just returned from the US 3 weeks ago. My 13 year old picked up Suzuki violin 3 years ago in the US. She played in both the school’s and community orchestra. She is currently on Suzuki book 5 and is very keen to continue to make progress in her violin skills. Singapore is very ABRSM based. Question I have is how can she manage both Suzuki method and ABRSM? How can you help her?
I would appreciate your suggestion as I have little knowledge on how to progress from here because I have no music background.
    Thank you.

    Valencia

    • Hello Valencia, I think there should be no problem for your daughter to do both Suzuki and ABRSM, as she has good music reading skills from her involvement in the orchestras. I will be happy to discuss further at a trial lesson when you are free. Please have a look at the available lesson times and sms me at 96611413. Best Regards Peter

  13. Hi Peter

I am keen for my 6 year son to have violin lessons with you. Is the time slot for wednesday evenings still available please ? Thank you.

    • Hi Christine, yes someone is already having a trial lesson Wednesday at 7.15pm slot on 2/1. I can let you know later if it is available the following week. Wednesday 6.45pm and 7.45pm is available this week if you can come. Please sms or call 96611413 to confirm. Best regards Peter

  14. Dear Peter,

Both my sister and I are interested in getting a real affordable violin as both of us are still schooling. We have grades in theory of music and both of us plays the piano as well. We thought of getting a violin because we really like how it sounds. Can you advise on the price range (full-size) based on your expertise and any recommended slots for us if we were to go for your trial lesson? Thank you so much and sorry for any inconvenience caused. Warmest regards.

    • Hi Zhen Kang, for a real affordable violin you can choose the $150 beginners violin. To see the available time slots for trial lessons please have a look at the homepage http://www.strings2u.wordpress.com and see the heading “Available Times” as you scroll down. You can sms me at 96611413 regarding which time suits you. Best regards Peter

  15. Hi we are relocating to Singapore in Augudt and looking for a Suzuki violin teacher for our 9 year old daughter who has just moved on to Suzuki book 2 Saturdays would be great for us!

    • Hi Clare, I have put your daughter on the Saturday waitlist. When you arrive in August please give me a call at 96611413 and I hope to have a time available for you.
      Best regards
      Peter

  16. Hi Peter:

I’ve just a little question for you. How can i know about a violin tagged “nicolaus amatus fecit Cremona 1635” is true or a copy? it came to my hands as a payment for a job, i know about solid body guitars and basses but nothing about acoustic instruments. The only thing i know about that violin is was in a warehouse and received the worst treatment you can imagine for almost 40 years. Any advice you can give me will be very very highly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Mauricio Espinoza
    ( Santiago – Chile )

    • Hi Mauricio, original Amati violins are rare and very expensive. You probably have one of the many copies of an Amati. Most copies are worth around $1,000 if they are in playing condition and sound good. Some are worth much more, so it is hard to say what you have. The label inside the violin is probably also a copy of the original. I suggest you take it to a violin shop and ask them for their opinion – if they offer to buy it then it must be worth more than they offer so have someone who plays have a look at it. Best regards Peter

  17. hi, Peter, GX here. I am an adult had certain but not many experiences in music. I just texted you. can I book Dec 5 2013, at 6 pm? I have one violin with broken string. Can you help me fix it? Thanks

    • Hi GX, I have booked you for Dec 5 at 5.45pm – can you come then? Also, I can fix the string for you. I smsed the address to you. Best regards Peter

  18. Hi Peter,

    thank you .

    Ashley

    • Hi Ashley, the half sized violin is $150 for the 100 series and $320 for the 300 series. You are welcome to come try the violins at any of the following times: Monday: from 12noon till 9pm; Tuesday: from 12noon till 4pm; Wednesday: 12noon till 3pm; Thursday: 12noon till 3pm; Friday: 12noon till 3pm; Saturday: after 6.15pm; Sunday: after 6pm.
Call or sms me at 96611413 to arrange a time to come and visit when I am not teaching violin. Best regards Peter

  19. Hi, Peter,

I am interested in finally starting up lessons with you. I am looking at a permanent weekly time Tuesday at 3:00 PM if that is still available. Also, what material would you like me to obtain for our lessons together? I’d like to get them ahead of time; I know I need work on my bowing and intonation – so rusty, but so happy to be playing again. if possible, so I can peruse therm and get a little practice in beforehand.

    Thank you for your time!

    Carolyn

PS: Love my violin – such a lovely sound – well – it would be! :o)

    • Hi Carolyn, I am delighted that you can start lessons as Tuesday 3pm is available for you. Please let me know if you want to start tomorrow or later in the month. I would like to start with the Suzuki Violin School Book 4. Let me know if this is suitable for you. Very glad you love the violin 🙂

  22. Hi Peter,

I am planning to take up violin lessons with you but would like to take a trial lesson first. Is there any slots available on weekdays after 5.30 pm?

    Thank You (:

    Nadirah

  23. hi my son is nearly six and very interested to learn violin, i saw that u have a time slot on weeknights around 5pm. i would be picking him up from school at 4,30 at holland village and coming straight over to ulu pandan,do you think that would be ample time or is it a bit of a walk from the carpark etc to find your place? just trying to gauge the aprox timing it would take:)

also he has never played before, other than having fun in the shop:), he has a very good ear for recalling music. would you recommend 30 min lessons for someone his age and level as sufficient?

    thank you jade

    • Hi Jade, I can see you this Thursday 19/1. You can arrive between 5pm and 5.15pm so don’t worry about the timing. A violin will be provided for the trial lesson if needed and 30 minutes is definitely enough for a beginner. If you could sms me at 96611413 I will sms you the address and directions to the lesson location. Hope to hear from you soon and I look forward to meeting you and your son – best regards Peter – Strings2u
