BUYING a VIOLIN in Sydney

BUYING a VIOLIN in Sydney:

MV100-small

BEGINNERS MV100 Violin for $290-$390 at Strings2u

Buying a VIOLIN can be an expensive affair. Of course, you want to have the best sounding violin for your money. However, it is difficult to know if you are really getting your money’s worth or over paying.

HOW CAN I HELP? As a teacher, I have been helping students to get the best sounding violin for their money.

HOW MUCH SHOULD I PAY?
For the beginners violins $290-$390, I select the best sounding violins so you may not need to pay more to get a good sounding violin.
For ADVANCED violins, YOU SHOULD PAY A LOT LESS than the retail price as Strings2u prices are around HALF THE PRICE. This is because I do not have to cost in the overheads such as rental and staff salaries.
Buying from Strings2u situated at Chisholm St Wolli Creek Sydney, YOU SHOULD PAY A LOT LESS than the retail price for the ADVANCED violins. My prices are around HALF THE PRICE. This is because I do not have to cost in the overheads like a retail shop, such as rental and staff salaries.
Also, as a violin teacher I have selected the best sounding BEGINNER ($290) and INTERMEDIATE ($400-$500) violins for students, and set them up to sound their best.

TO SEE PHOTOS and DETAILED DESCRIPTION of the violins please click “New Violins” or “Antique Violins.”

BEGINNER’S VIOLIN: If you are just a beginner then I can supply you with a New Beginner’s Violin which costs ONLY $290-$390 (which includes the violin, the case, the bow and resin).
Once your boy/girl reaches 1/2 size and completes Book 1, then you can consider buying an intermediate violin. By then he/she will have enough skills to harness the qualities of a better violin.

INTERMEDIATE to ADVANCED Violin – beyond Book 1: A student is ready for an intermediate violin when they progress beyond Book 1. They will benefit from having a better sounding violin.

Intermediate to Advanced Violins are available as follows:
Chinese handmade Violins: 1/10, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and 4/4 or full-sized.
Antique Violins: mostly 4/4 or full-sized and some 1/2 and 3/4 sized.

What’s the difference? The new Chinese Violins have a brighter sound while the antique violins have a warmer sound due to their age. In price there is not a significant difference. Both New and Antique Violins range from $590-$2190 and above.

    • Hi Jace, can you come to Pandan Valley Condominium with your 5 year old for a fitting to determine the size of violin needed. A 5 year old will need either a 1/8 or 1/4 size beginners violin which will cost you only S$130 including the case and bow.
To find out for yourself what size you need have a read of my post “How to Know What Size Violin You Need – Fitting the violin by arm length.”
You can contact me at 96611413 or email strings2u2@gmail.com to arrange a time when you can come.
Look forward to hearing from you – Peter

  1. Hey, I am about 1.34 tall and I would like a violin. My parents asked me to search for a violin online and they will pay. So I was thinking, can you please recommend a violin for me? PLEASE

  2. Hi, thanks for your question. You may need a 1/4 size or a 1/2 size violin. To determine the size you need take the measurement of your left arm from the armpit to the fingers and look at the corresponding violin size below. (If your measurement is in between sizes, get the Violin Size that is below your measurement).
Violin Size – Arm Length in inches:
    4/4 – 23 inches
    3/4 – 22”
    1/2 – 20”
    1/4 – 18 ½”
    1/8 – 16 ½”
    1/10 – 15”
    1/16 – 14”
If you need a 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 or full size and live in Singapore or Malaysia you can visit my showroom to decide which violin is best for you. If you are not able to visit then could you tell me what amount in Singapore dollars that you are wanting to spend and I can recommend an instrument for you. If you have any more questions please email strings2u2@gmail.com

  4. Hi. I’m an adult standing at about 1.7m tall. I would like to pick up a violin. Which size do you recommend for me? Thanks a lot!

  5. Hi, I’m a fourteen year old currently preparing for diploma, and I hope to find a violin which suits me since the current Chinese violin I’m using right now isn’t exactly satisfactory when it comes to the tone colour. May I know what sort of violin would be advisable?

    • Hi, for diploma level you will need a violin that is responsive to the bow for dynamics, speed and tone colour especially in the higher registers. I can recommend (SN:184 S$1890) Master Violin-Copy of Joseph Guarneri Del Gesu 1730-Russian Spruce aged 20yrs. It is found at https://strings2u.wordpress.com/new-violins-available/
Tone is very personal, so you can try the other comparable new violins I have. There are also some antique violins around $2,000 which you should try. Please have a look at the following times that I am available and let me know when you can come: starting Tuesday 1/1. FOR TRYING OUT the violins/violas: Call or sms me at 96611413 to arrange a time to come and visit when I am not teaching violin as follows: Monday anytime day or night; Wednesday: from 12noon till 3pm; Thursday: 12noon till 5.30pm; Friday: 12noon till 3pm; Saturday: after 6.30pm; Sunday: after 6pm.
      Wednesday: 4.00, 5.30, 6.30, 7.15pm; Friday: (4/1: 4.30, 5.00pm); Saturday: 5/1: 11am (after 6.30pm for violin sales).

  6. Hi, I developed a passion to learn violin. I am 16 , about 1.65cm tall. My teacher commented that i’m rather a fast learner and has shown great potential too. She suggested me to get a violin that could bring me all the way to grade 8. What would you recomend?

    • Hi, for Grade 8 you will need a violin that is responsive to the bow for dynamics, speed and tone colour especially in the higher registers. I can recommend (SN:175 S$1490) Copy of Stradivarius – Russian Spruce & Russian Maple, both aged 16yrs and (SN:201 S$1890) Master Violin-Copy of Joseph Guarneri Del Gesu Violin of the year 1730-Russian Spruce aged 20yrs. They are found at https://strings2u.wordpress.com/new-violins-available/
Tone is very personal, so you can try the other comparable new violins I have.
Many violinists prefer the sound of antique violins which sound rounder, warmer and more resonant due to the aging of the violin. I have two very good sounding antique violins around $2,000 which you should try.
Please have a look at the following times that I am available and let me know when you can come: starting Tuesday 1/1. FOR TRYING OUT the violins/violas: Call or sms me at 96611413 to arrange a time to come and visit when I am not teaching violin as follows: Monday anytime day or night; Wednesday: from 12noon till 2.30pm; Thursday: 12noon till 3.15pm; Friday: 12noon till 2.30pm; Saturday: after 7.15pm; Sunday: after 6pm.

  9. Hi, I’m Theresia..
I’m about 7’4 tall and i’ m looking for violin with good sound.
but, until now i’m still a beginner. can you suggest me the best violin for me?

    • Hi Theresia, thanks for your question. Violins that cost more will have a better sound. Can you tell me how much you are wanting to spend on a violin as I can provide for you the best sounding violin to fit your budget. Regards Peter +65 96611413

      • Oh, I live in Papua, Indonesia. Maybe the ship will be higher so if you just provide me with the cheap one will be better. In fact, I’m still a beginner so the cheap won’t be a problem.
        Regards,
        Theresia

  10. Hello 🙂

I am 14 and I am 1.67m in height and I’m planning self learn violin on my own right now. What model do you recommend? And how much will the cost be?

  11. Hi Peter! I’m interested in trying (posibbly buying) a beginner violin from you. I’m 13 and 1.63m(5.3ft) tall. I’m very very very interested in playing a violin!! What size would you recommend? And if i buy, would you accept credit cards?(My mom is buying) Thanks in advance!!!

    • Hi Josh, You probably need a full-sized violin. I accept cash only for violin sales and a beginner’s violin will cost $150-$200.
Call or sms me at 96611413 to arrange a time to come and visit when I am not teaching violin as follows: Monday: from 12noon till 9pm; Tuesday: from 12noon till 4pm; Wednesday: 12noon till 3pm; Thursday: 12noon till 3pm; Friday: 12noon till 3pm; Saturday: after 6.15pm; Sunday: after 6pm.
      Best regards Peter

    • Hi, for an adult beginner you may want to get either the beginners 100 series for $150-$200 or the intermediate 300 series which sounds better and looks better for $320-$450. You may like the sound of either of these. I don’t recommend buying a more expensive instrument if you are a beginner. The ones I sell are already good sounding as I have selected the best sounding violins of these models. Best regards Peter

    • Hi May, an adult beginner usually chooses between the better beginner model 100 for $200 or the 300 series intermediate violin for $320-600. Both are adequate as they sound good. You might play for 1-2 years before you will hear a need to upgrade. Hope this helps – Peter

  12. Hi, am looking for a 1/8 violin as my daughter just dis a trial and is interested to continue with her school. However, am not willing to spend $380 for a beginners as I not sure how far her interest will take her. Please advice?

  13. Hi! I am a 27-year old adult who is interested to play the violin.. I am a Filipino and standing 5 feet tall. Can you advise me which violin should I get for a starter like myself?? 🙂

    • Hi, the size of the violin you need depends on the length of your arms. Here is a quick test or your arm length: 1. take a violin and put it on your left shoulder so it touches your neck; 2. reach your left outstretched hand to cup the scroll; 3. if your fingers can curve to the top of the scroll then you can play this violin. Hope this helps – Peter

  14. Hi, I would like to get a violin for myself (1.54m) in height and another violin for my 4yo old. However, my son is left handed, does this impact the choice of violin for him? Thanks. – Kate

    • Hello Kate, you will need a full-size violin and your son will need a 1/10 size. Left handed preference makes no difference to the playing of the violin as they are all played the same way: left hand on the fingerboard and right hand on the bow.
You are welcome to come and try the violins at any of the times below. Just let me know when you can come visit:
Monday afternoon or night; Wednesday: 12noon till 4pm; Thursday: 12noon till 2pm; Friday: 12noon till 2.30pm and after 7.30pm; Saturday: after 7.15pm; Sunday: after 6pm.
      Best regards

      • Hi Peter, thanks for the reply. Another question I hope to seek your advice is, since my son is left handed, will it make learning violin harder for him? Do I need to get a teacher who can teach a left handed person violin too?

      • Hi Kate, your son has an advantage with the left hand playing the notes on the neck. The right hand will hold the bow which is in some ways easier. I have taught both right and left handed students and find that over time there is no disadvantage for either. What is more important is regular daily practice to ensure success. Best regards Peter

  15. hi, I’m now starting book 2, and I want to upgrade my violin. but I live in Indonesia. would it be any difficulties to get a violin into a plane flight ? I’m wondering to buy a new violin in Singapore

    • Hi, I can suggest that you contact the airline that you will be travelling on and ask them if they have a policy for violins as travel on luggage as the size of the violin case will be oversized for carry on luggage. You have to choose the airline that you travel on based on this policy as not all airlines have a policy to allow violin/musical instruments as carry on. Regards Peter
