Buying a VIOLIN can be an expensive affair. Of course, you want to have the best sounding violin for your money. However, it is difficult to know if you are really getting your money’s worth or over paying.
HOW CAN I HELP? As a teacher, I have been helping students to get the best sounding violin for their money.
HOW MUCH SHOULD I PAY?
For the beginners violins $290-$390, I select the best sounding violins so you may not need to pay more to get a good sounding violin.
For ADVANCED violins, YOU SHOULD PAY A LOT LESS than the retail price as Strings2u prices are around HALF THE PRICE. This is because I do not have to cost in the overheads such as rental and staff salaries.

BEGINNER’S VIOLIN: If you are just a beginner then I can supply you with a New Beginner’s Violin which costs ONLY $290-$390 (which includes the violin, the case, the bow and resin).
Once your boy/girl reaches 1/2 size and completes Book 1, then you can consider buying an intermediate violin. By then he/she will have enough skills to harness the qualities of a better violin.
INTERMEDIATE to ADVANCED Violin – beyond Book 1: A student is ready for an intermediate violin when they progress beyond Book 1. They will benefit from having a better sounding violin.
Intermediate to Advanced Violins are available as follows:
Chinese handmade Violins: 1/10, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and 4/4 or full-sized.
Antique Violins: mostly 4/4 or full-sized and some 1/2 and 3/4 sized.
What’s the difference? The new Chinese Violins have a brighter sound while the antique violins have a warmer sound due to their age. In price there is not a significant difference. Both New and Antique Violins range from $590-$2190 and above.

Hi Jace, can you come to Pandan Valley Condominium with your 5 year old for a fitting to determine the size of violin needed. A 5 year old will need either a 1/8 or 1/4 size beginners violin which will cost you only S$130 including the case and bow.

Hi, thanks for your question. You may need a 1/4 size or a 1/2 size violin. To determine the size you need take the measurement of your left arm from the armpit to the fingers and look at the corresponding violin size below. (If your measurement is in between sizes, get the Violin Size that is below your measurement).
Violin Size – Arm Length in inches:
4/4 – 23 inches
3/4 – 22”
1/2 – 20”
1/4 – 18 ½”
1/8 – 16 ½”
1/10 – 15”
1/16 – 14”

Hi, for diploma level you will need a violin that is responsive to the bow for dynamics, speed and tone colour especially in the higher registers. Many violinists prefer the sound of antique violins which sound rounder, warmer and more resonant due to the aging of the violin. I have two very good sounding antique violins around $2,000 which you should try.

just want to inquire what type of violin is needed for a beginner for an adult. also could you advise the price range?
Hi, for an adult beginner you may want to get either the beginners 100 series for $150-$200 or the intermediate 300 series which sounds better and looks better for $320-$450. You may like the sound of either of these. I don’t recommend buying a more expensive instrument if you are a beginner. The ones I sell are already good sounding as I have selected the best sounding violins of these models. Best regards Peter
Hi May, an adult beginner usually chooses between the better beginner model 100 for $200 or the 300 series intermediate violin for $320-600. Both are adequate as they sound good. You might play for 1-2 years before you will hear a need to upgrade. Hope this helps – Peter

Hi, the size of the violin you need depends on the length of your arms. Here is a quick test or your arm length: 1. take a violin and put it on your left shoulder so it touches your neck; 2. reach your left outstretched hand to cup the scroll; 3. if your fingers can curve to the top of the scroll then you can play this violin. Hello Kate, you will need a full-size violin and your son will need a 1/10 size. Left handed preference makes no difference to the playing of the violin as they are all played the same way: left hand on the fingerboard and right hand on the bow.

Hi Peter, thanks for the reply. Another question I hope to seek your advice is, since my son is left handed, will it make learning violin harder for him? Do I need to get a teacher who can teach a left handed person violin too?
Hi Kate, your son has an advantage with the left hand playing the notes on the neck. The right hand will hold the bow which is in some ways easier. I have taught both right and left handed students and find that over time there is no disadvantage for either. What is more important is regular daily practice to ensure success. Best regards Peter

Hi, I can suggest that you contact the airline that you will be travelling on and ask them if they have a policy for violins as travel on luggage as the size of the violin case will be oversized for carry on luggage. You have to choose the airline that you travel on based on this policy as not all airlines have a policy to allow violin/musical instruments as carry on. Regards Peter
